Tewkesbury Borough Council Tewkesbury Borough Council now has responsibility for stray dogs 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. The Borough does not have a dog warden service and the provision for seizing stray dogs is made through a contractor. The Police will continue to deal with Dangerous Dogs and dogs acting in a dangerous manner. Members of the public who seize a stray dog or wish to report one within the Borough during normal working hours, i.e. between the hours of 09.00 to 17.00 Monday to Friday, please contact Environmental Health on 01684 272 191. Outside of the hours 09.00 to 17.00 Monday to Friday, you should contact the out of hours service on 01684 293 445. Arrangements will be made for the contractor to call you back to arrange collection at the earliest possible opportunity. Gloucester City Council Call 01452 396 396. Cotswold District Council Call 01285 623 000. Forest of Dean Council: The street wardens make regular patrols throughout the Forest of Dean and will respond to notifications of lost or stray dogs. If you need to report a lost or stray dog either fill in and email the general request or telephone 01594 812264 Monday to Friday between 8.30am to 5pm. Outside of these hours or at weekends and on bank holidays contact 07505 820220. You will be asked to give a description of the dog, details of whether it is wearing identification and the area where the dogs has been lost or found.
When the wardens are notified of a stray they will attend the scene as soon as possible to catch the dog. They will then try to identify the owner so the dog can be returned and advice given to prevent the dog straying again.
If the owner cannot be identified or contacted, the stray dog will be impounded at licensed kennels. The council must keep all stray dogs for 7 days during which time the owner may reclaim them. Owners will be required to pay the statutory fee of £25.00 plus any costs for boarding, feeding and any veterinary costs to claim their dog. In order to claim the dog the owner must provide a description together with personal identification. After 7 days, if the dog has not been reunited with its owner it will be offered for adoption and found a suitable new home.
Remember to make sure that your dog always wears a collar with a name tag or identity disc bearing your name and address, then in the event of the dog straying it will be reunited with you more easily. In addition get your dog microchipped, then if it loses its collar and tag it can still be identified. The street wardens can provide this service at a cost of £10.00.
